A Bicycle Journey to the Bottom of the Americas: Being a True Account of a Bike Adventure from Alaska

A Bicycle Journey to the Bottom of the Americas: Being a True Account of a Bike Adventure from Alaska Review

Remember when you were a kid and you got your first bicycle? After a few weeks of mastering the dynamics of balancing, steering, and pedaling, all at the same time hopefully, your father released his protective, steadying grip on the seat and you went wobbling off on your own. It was probably your very first taste of independence and freedom and you knew you liked that feeling very much. Few things in life have ever compared to that first solo ride.Almost 40 years after my first solo bike ride, I was able to recapture the excitement and passion of that momentous occasion when I pedaled out of Anchorage, Alaska bound for Tierra del Fuego-the very tip of South America. No matter that it was 17,500 miles distant and would take 3½ years to get there I vowed I would achieve that goal if it took the rest of my life.

Major Taylor: The Extraordinary Career of a Champion Bicycle Racer

Major Taylor: The Extraordinary Career of a Champion Bicycle Racer Review

World champion at 19... One of the first black athletes to become world champion in any sport... 1-mile record holder... American sprint champion in 1898, 1899, 1900... triumphant tours of Europe and Australia... Victories against all European champions...

Until now a forgotten, shadowy figure, Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor is here revealed as one of the early sports world's most stylish, entertaining, and gentlemanly personalities. Born in 1878 in Indianapolis, the son of poor rural parents, Taylor worked in a bike shop until prominent bicycle racer "Birdie" Munger coached him for his first professional racing successes in 1896. Despite continuous bureaucratic—and, at times, physical—opposition, he won his first national championship two years later and became world champion in 1899 in Montreal. This beautifully illustrated, vividly narrated, and scrupulously researched biography recreates the life of a great international athlete at the turn of the century. Based on ten years of research—including extensive interviews with Major Taylor's 91-year old daughter—this is the dramatic story of a young black man who, against prodigious odds, rose to fame and stardom in the tempestuous world of international professional bicycle racing a century ago.

Following the Sun: A Bicycle Pilgrimage From Andalusia to the Hebrides

Following the Sun: A Bicycle Pilgrimage From Andalusia to the Hebrides Review

An entrancing, sun-drenched bicycle journey, from the beaches of southern Spain to solar temples in the Outer Hebrides. In this great feast of armchair travel, John Hanson Mitchell tells of his fifteen-hundred-mile ride on a trusty old Peugeot bicycle from the port of Cadiz to just below the Arctic Circle. He follows the European spring up through southern Spain, the wine and oyster country near Bordeaux, to Versailles (the palace of the "Sun King"), Wordsworth's Lake District, precipitous Scottish highlands, and finally to a Druid temple on the island of Lewis in the Hebrides, a place where Midsummer is celebrated in pagan majesty as the near-midnight sun dips and then quickly rises over the horizon. In true John Mitchell fashion this journey is interspersed with myth, natural history, and ritual, all revolving around the lure and lore of the sun, culturally and historically. The journey is as delicious as it is fascinating, with an appeal for all those who look south in February and are drawn to dunes, picnics under castle walls, spring flowers, terraced vineyards, Moorish outposts, magic and celebrations. In short, to everything under the sun. A Merloyd Lawrence Book

Richard's 21st Century Bicycle Book

Richard's 21st Century Bicycle Book Review

The New York Times called Richard's Bicycle Book the very best, the only good book ever written for the amateur cyclist when it was first published almost thirty years ago. Quickly recognized as the essential manual for cyclists at all levels, it has gone on to become a million-copy bestseller. But the times-and the bikes-have changed. Now Richard-older, wiser, and in many ways younger, too-is ready to lead a new generation into a new millennium in this completely new edition of his cyclist's bible.

Richard's 21st-Century Bicycle Book covers all kinds of bicycles-from mountain bikes to kids' tricycles, and including cargo cycles, exotic superbikes and futuristic 70-mph vehicles. Richard provides expert advice on buying the right bicycle and setting it up for maximum comfort and efficiency as well as thorough evaluations of such accessories as anti-puncture tires, child seats, helmets, lights and more. His basic lessons will have even the most wary riding within 15 minutes, and his tips on negotiating traffic will guarantee safe travel for pleasure and fitness riders alike. For the more adventurous cyclists, Richard especially explores the pleasures of mountain biking (with a special focus on recent advances in bike technology), transcontinental touring, off-road expeditions, and competition biking. Bikes and cycling are economical, ecological and, most importantly, great fun, and this is the guide to lead everyone-Sunday cyclists and Olympic hopefuls alike-pedaling into the 21st-century.

Wheels of Change: How Women Rode the Bicycle to Freedom (With a Few Flat Tires Along the Way)

Wheels of Change: How Women Rode the Bicycle to Freedom (With a Few Flat Tires Along the Way) Review

Take a lively look at women's history from aboard a bicycle, which granted females the freedom of mobility and helped empower women's liberation. Through vintage photographs, advertisements, cartoons, and songs, Wheels of Change transports young readers to bygone eras to see how women used the bicycle to improve their lives. Witty in tone and scrapbook-like in presentation, the book deftly covers early (and comical) objections, influence on fashion, and impact on social change inspired by the bicycle, which, according to Susan B. Anthony, "has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world."

From the Hardcover edition.

A compelling story about the importance of standing up for what is right

"I was almost home when I saw our new next-door neighbor, Miss Frances Willard, standing in front of her house. Oddly enough, she was holding on to a safety-bicycle!"

Lillie is having a difficult year. She's still struggling with her mother's recent death, and now her father has moved the family to the other side of town. But when Frances Willard-Lillie's new neighbor-decides to learn how to ride a bicycle, Lillie finds promising change all around her.

Even though her father disapproves of their progressive neighbor, Lillie and Miss Frances soon become friends. Miss Frances is involved in more than taming a wild bike, however; she is part of Susan B. Anthony's circle, fighting for the right for women to vote, as well as child-labor laws and better conditions for workers. Together, Lillie and Miss Frances take on their beasts-a bike and a daunting spelling bee-and find the will to dust themselves off, get back up, and ride for all they're worth.

Set in the late 1800s, this engaging novel skillfully blends fine storytelling with women's history.
