Barnett's Manual: Analysis and Procedures for Bicycle Mechanics (4 Vol. Set)

Barnett's Manual: Analysis and Procedures for Bicycle Mechanics (4 Vol. Set) Review

Barnett's Manual has become the industry standard, demystifying every aspect of bicycle repair by emphasizing detail, logic, and measurement. The manual, published in four volumes and printed on perforated, grease-resistant paper, can be used by both bike mechanics and the serious DIY-er. Each chapter is structured logically for maximum use: terminology, reasons for service, prerequisites, tool choices, anticipation of complications, fits and dimensions, service procedures, and troubleshooting. Extensive reference information minimizes the need to cross-reference to other sources when solving a repair problem, and the drawings on nearly every page help explain each procedure. This new, updated edition of the bible of bicycle repair also includes more than 1,000 clear and detailed drawings illustrating each procedure.

Amazon Best Books of the Month, June 2010: Frank Lenz was a man driven by his passions. As an accomplished "wheelman" during the late 19th century, Lenz’s dreams were dominated by the emerging sport of cycling and an intense desire to make a name for himself. In May of 1892, he attempted to fuse both by embarking on a quest to circumscribe the globe by bicycle. The journey had already been accomplished in tandem, but Lenz upped the ante--and raised eyebrows--by announcing he would ride his dangerous route alone. The Lost Cyclist is a riveting tale of tragedy, pride, and naivete that is both brilliantly told and meticulously researched. Opinions may differ as to whether Lenz was unaware or unconcerned by the inherent dangers he faced, but the story of his fateful journey belongs on the varied shelves of cycling enthusiasts, mystery fans, and nonfiction devotees alike. --Dave Callanan

Product Description
In the late 1880s, Frank Lenz of Pittsburgh, a renowned high-wheel racer and long-distance tourist, dreamed of cycling around the world. He finally got his chance by recasting himself as a champion of the downsized "safety-bicycle" with inflatable tires, the forerunner of the modern road bike that was about to become wildly popular. In the spring of 1892 he quit his accounting job and gamely set out west to cover twenty thousand miles over three continents as a correspondent for Outing magazine. Two years later, after having survived countless near disasters and unimaginable hardships, he approached Europe for the final leg.

He never made it. His mysterious disappearance in eastern Turkey sparked an international outcry and compelled Outing to send William Sachtleben, another larger-than-life cyclist, on Lenz's trail. Bringing to light a wealth of information, Herlihy's gripping narrative captures the soaring joys and constant dangers accompanying the bicycle adventurer in the days before paved roads and automobiles. This untold story culminates with Sachtleben's heroic effort to bring Lenz's accused murderers to justice, even as troubled Turkey teetered on the edge of collapse.

Richard's 21st Century Bicycle Book

Richard's 21st Century Bicycle Book Review

The New York Times called Richard's Bicycle Book the very best, the only good book ever written for the amateur cyclist when it was first published almost thirty years ago. Quickly recognized as the essential manual for cyclists at all levels, it has gone on to become a million-copy bestseller. But the times-and the bikes-have changed. Now Richard-older, wiser, and in many ways younger, too-is ready to lead a new generation into a new millennium in this completely new edition of his cyclist's bible.

Richard's 21st-Century Bicycle Book covers all kinds of bicycles-from mountain bikes to kids' tricycles, and including cargo cycles, exotic superbikes and futuristic 70-mph vehicles. Richard provides expert advice on buying the right bicycle and setting it up for maximum comfort and efficiency as well as thorough evaluations of such accessories as anti-puncture tires, child seats, helmets, lights and more. His basic lessons will have even the most wary riding within 15 minutes, and his tips on negotiating traffic will guarantee safe travel for pleasure and fitness riders alike. For the more adventurous cyclists, Richard especially explores the pleasures of mountain biking (with a special focus on recent advances in bike technology), transcontinental touring, off-road expeditions, and competition biking. Bikes and cycling are economical, ecological and, most importantly, great fun, and this is the guide to lead everyone-Sunday cyclists and Olympic hopefuls alike-pedaling into the 21st-century.

The Noblest Invention: An Illustrated History of the Bicycle

The Noblest Invention: An Illustrated History of the Bicycle Review

Why We Ride

From the time we first wobble away from Mom or Dad on two wheels, we're hooked. The mobility, the freedom that the bicycle brings is our first taste of independence. For many, that feeling persists, and bicycling becomes a lifelong love. It represents the promise of the open road, the enthralling sense of speed, the quiet places, the challenging trails-- all in the pleasant company of family, chums, or just yourself. And then there's that moment of terrified, bittersweet pride when your own child rides on once you have let go.

The Noblest Invention celebrates this unique interaction between humans and machine. The editors of Bicycling magazine have created a unique history of the bicycle that illustrates, through personal essays and breathtaking photography, why this simple machine has captured the imagination of people of all ages around the world. Chronicling the evolution of the bicycle from the primitive wooden Laufmaschine to the high-tech mountain bike with its specialized frame and suspension, this book takes a fascinating look at the innovations, the early creators and their wares, and how the bike has had an impact on culture as a tool in the workplace and as an inspiration for artists and writers alike.

From the timeless allure of the greatest annual sporting event, the Tour de France, celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, to the mystery of the bicycle's true inventor (did da Vinci really have a hand in it?), take a trip with this remarkable feat of engineering. Remember, relive, and most important, enjoy the ride.
